Cycling Orthotics
Hot Spots? Arch Pain? Foot goes Numb? Knee pain? Custom orthotics can alleviate and usually eliminate these symptoms. But you don't have to have a foot problem to enjoy cycling footbeds. Not everyone needs custom orthotics for everyday living, but when it comes to sports which place your foot on a rigid platform like cycling, skating and skiing, then you should consider getting some. The reason for this is that these particular sports demand your foot be fixed in one position while at the same time placing forces on your feet which can over time fatigue them leading to soreness, decreased performance and injuries.
Improve performance with Custom Cycling Orthotics nf gain better alignment. Stability of the foot within the cycling shoe translates to better alignment of the ankle which in turn improves the hip-knee-ankle relationship in less lateral deviation of the knee in it's up/down motion (see photos below). Better distribution of power across all of the forefoot and not just the ball of the foot. The result is a larger platform in the foot to drive the pedal.
As an additional benefit to a stable foot, leg fatigue is reduced, which will then maintain proper pedaling mechanics, even after hours in the saddle.
Improve comfort. Your foot will fill the cycling shoe like never before, eliminating any sloppiness you may have experienced in the past.
Prevent injuries. Excessive pronation is believed to be the culprit of many cycling injuries. Injuries due to overpronation can manifest in several location on the cyclist, ranging from the foot, arch knee, hip, and even low back problems. The mechanism here involves the inward rolling of the inside portion of the foot. This may be due to a weak or low arch. The result is an unnatural stress on the tibia causing it to rotate inward which in turn puts pressure on the knee- which can explain many of the knee problems popular among cyclists. This sequence, if left untreated may continue up to the hip and low back as well, causing pain and and dysfunction.
Another common malady found in cyclists (and of course, the general population) is uneven leg length. While there are more factors responsible for this than we will mention here, orthotics can help, as do shims placed between the shoe and cleat, when indicated. Our cycling-specific footbed allows the heel to rest deep within the cup of the cycling shoe unlike other orthotics which place too much material in the heel causing the foot to lift out of the shoe increasing the risk of pulling your foot out of the shoe during sprinting or out of the saddle pedaling.
The final result means better alignment of your foot and ankle in their strongest stance, which in turn, transters power through the pedal unlike any other weapon in your arsenal.
